Argentinian rugby icon Hugo Porta will be joining SA rugby hero Morne du Plessis at the launch of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’s Soweto Schools Rugby Project on 26th July.

The following day Porta, a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, will join Du Plessis, chairman of the South African Foundation, and fellow South African Laureus Friends & Ambassadors’ Deshun Deysel, Natalie du Toit, Frankie Fredericks, Baby Jake Matlala, John Moeti, Lucas Radebe and Cynthia Tshaka in the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk marathon in Johannesburg to help raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Trust South Africa.

The Soweto Schools Rugby Project is part of the Soweto Rugby Club’s strategic plan. The conception of the initiative was driven by the desire to be proactive in resolving the transformation debate in South African Rugby and at the same time there was a desire to adequately empower participants so that when they progress in the game and in life in general then they would have the tools to cope. As such it was designed to include life skills and a strong community developmental focus.

It endeavours to empower the youth by providing opportunities for education through the sport of rugby in Soweto so as to nurture quality human beings and individuals geared for success. The programme currently has 560 participants between the ages of eight years to 18 years with 28 coaches.

Laureus World Sports Academy, is a unique association of 46 of the greatest living sporting legends. The Laureus World Sports Academy members act as global ambassadors for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, volunteering their time to visit projects in order to draw attention to the problems afflicting society today.
