UK: Clothing and footwear sales fall sharply in June

UK clothing and footwear sales fell back sharply in June as changeable weather stifled demand according to the latest figures from the British_Retail_Consortium published today (15 July).

Total retail sales values grew by 2.1% in the month, but fell 0.4% on a like-for-like basis against June last year.

This means sales have now been lower than a year ago in three of the past four months - making this the worst since summer 2005, the BRC's Monthly Sales Monitor shows.

Increasing demands on household budgets and the weakness of the housing market mean shoppers are increasingly price-conscious and reluctant to spend on big-ticket items.
