Cycling in fixThe Competition Commission last week issued summonses against cycling retailers, Fritz Pienaar Cycles and Cycle Lab because of alleged discussions on price fixing – a charge that has been denied by the retailers, who claim that they met to discuss the state of the industry.
The Competition Commission says it is in possession of minutes indicating that the two retailers – as well as others – had met to discuss ways of working together to raise prices in order to increase their margins. In a response on their website Cycle Lab says that a meeting was attended by about 40 cycling retailers and wholesalers at the end of last year to discuss the state of the industry and how to meet the challenges of the economic downturn.
