Swazi Extreme with a difference

The 9th Swazi Extreme, Southern Africa’s longest-running expedition race, will take place 24 April. Over 260 athletes are expected to compete in the race which takes place in the Kingdom of Swaziland. The race region and the starting destination will only be made public a week before the event takes place.

This year’s event has changed slightly from last – the winners will not be those who travel the route the fastest to the podium; the winners will be those who go the furthest in the alotted race time of 60 hours. The route choice will depend on compulsory control points (CPs), but the top dogs can add to their tally from optional CPs, which will add an extra edge to their race.

The minimum compulsory distance will be 220km for the Pro Event competitors, with an additional 100km for those who wish to add the optional CPs. Additionally there is a compulsory six hour sleep outside the transition area.

Mountain biking will consist of atleast 50% of the overall distance, but participants will also have to paddle flat-water canoes, tube rapids, kloof, open-water swimming, and bouldering and technical rope sections.
