PUMA signs Grant

PUMA has signed Stormers and Springbok flyhalf Peter Grant in a full sponsorship deal that extends beyond the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Grant, 23, has excelled in the Stormers’ Super 14 campaign and the PUMA deal is confirmation of his status as one of the rising stars of South African rugby. Grant should reap further rewards when new coach Pieter de Villiers names his first Springbok squad for the two tests against Wales next month (June).

”We are very pleased to welcome Peter to the PUMA rugby family. We look forward to Peter wearing our brand on and off the field and wish him a continuation of his exceptional performances so far this season,” said Brett Bellinger, PUMA’s marketing director.

Grant is the latest big name to join the PUMA rugby fold which includes Schalk Burger, Victor Matfield, Fourie du Preez, Ryan Kankowski, and Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira.

Grant was delighted with the deal: “It’s great to be associated with PUMA. They have great product and if you want to be the best you have to be with the best.”

Rugby commentators are expecting 2008 to be a massive year for Grant who broke through in 2007 and played the final two matches of the Tri Nations, against New Zealand and Australia. He has made a key contribution to the Stormers’ rise up the Super 14 table this season and is expected to be the Springbok number one flyhalf under new coach Pieter de Villiers.

Born in KwaZulu-Natal, where his parents own a sugar cane plantation, Grant studied at Stellenbosch University where he obtained a degree in business science. He aims to return to the family business when his rugby career comes to an end.
