Consumer Tribunal activeHazel Devraj has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Consumer Tribunal, an independent body established to adjudicate in cases involving the granting of credit. Operating separate from the National Credit Regulator, the Tribunal will also be responsible for hearing cases against credit providers that contravene the Act and can issue fines where it is deemed necessary. There are nearly 6.5-m South Africans blacklisted with credit bureaux and an estimated 17-m credit active consumers curently owe creditors R1-trillion. Devraj, in her early thirties, has completed a thesis on factors affecting women in the workplace. During the past year she had been seconded to the Tribunal as Acting CEO/Registrar, tasked with establishing the Tribunal.
