South Africans positiveWhile the frightening and sickening mob madness of the xenophobic attacks has cast a pall over the whole country and everything we do – including preparing for the 2010 FIFA World Cup – we forget that we were very positive just a short while ago.
In a poll by market research company African Respons, 71% of South Africans said that we will be ready to host the world cup – with Durban the most positive. The 82% Durbanites who said that we will be ready, is a massive increase from 8% who expressed confidence in a previous poll. Johannesburg, however, dropped from 82% to 70% and Cape Town from 62% to 59% respondents believing we will be ready. This optimism is not unrealistic as the LOC announced in March that renovations to all stadiums to be used during the 2010 Fifa World Cup are on track – although there are still concerns that the stadium in Port Elizabeth will not be ready for the Fifa Confederations Cup next year.
